Perception is Reality?

I had great time last Tuesday catching Phish with a bunch of friends.  Great Show. One of the reasons I hadn't posted in a while. I was recovering thinking. You can check out the setlist and download the show here.  This was a highlight of the first set, David Bowie.  Check out the insane new lights!  From the 9:30 mark on is a good time.

I also got to catch up with my favorite local band, Sun King, who were in town this weekend via Boston/NY City.  Check 'em out here.  They're like the strokes with a taste of relaxed summer flavor.  Technically proficient and a good background soundtrack to your next get-together.

Whilst mid-jam in a crowded, hole-in-the-wall bar, I had a thought that would become the theme for my night.  Is perception reality? And further more, but only somewhat related, how inherently grimy are people after 12am?

The crowd was stereotypical during the Summer Season on Cape Cod.  Boat shoes were being worn in abundance and most J.Crew patterns were on full display.  Double-fisting of drinks everywhere you looked.  Guys and girls grinning bashfully while leaning over in each others ears, flirting over the music.

Most of the time, this is a normal bar scene.  But when you're a bartender with local ties, everything looks different, like the Real World/Road Rules Challenge without the gay people. The couple that's trying to get back together even though they were with different people two nights ago, the girl who's guy is out of town for work and she's acting like it's spring break, and of course the singles looking to hook-up with whoever because...it's a new night and a new bar!

Later on, in the early hours of the next morning, a group of people hanging out after the show were talking and started laughing at an experience we've all had: the moment of engagement between two people trying to hook up.

At some point in the courting process, when either party has a feeling that they're getting lucky, most often the guy will think, "man, this is easy, I must be in the zone tonight, this girl is DEFINITELY into me" while the girl is thinking, "I hope I'm not coming off as a slut....I wonder if this guy is legitimate... Ah who cares, I wanna hook up just as much after vodka."

Which led everyone to agree on one thing.  You might think you're smooth, but the chances are you're both equally sluts and this probably happens a lot more than you think.  So before you change your name to Don Juan, realize that if it seems too easy, it probably is.  Furthermore, because of this, I feel like people after midnight are inherently grimy.  "Innocent until proven guilty" exists only in the court of law.  If two people look to be hitting it off, they probably already have.

Think about who you surround yourself with and the impact they have on your life.

Or like Jim Morrison once said, "keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel..."
