You Like the Internet? Protect IP/SOPA Will Stop That.

While the focus of this blog is to enjoy your time all the time, sometimes there are issues so important, they take precedence. This is one of the most important legal and governmental battles of the 21st century. I highlighted the video's basic points [w/ time code] below:

:40-1:05 What the government could control through this act/how corporations could control content, therefore infringing on consumer/small business' access to the internet's open marketplace.

1:20- How corporations could shut down small businesses, social media site, and creative websites.

1:55- The global impact this could have on the internet once countries follow the U.S.

2:15- How this will break down the infrastructure of the internet, actually making it less secure

2:40-2:55 Tampering with the structure of the internet in order to get people to pay for entertainment, an industry that contributes very little to our overall economy.

3:00- The laws and statutes we already have in place that protect against piracy and copyright infringement.

3:15- The ridiculous steps the government has already taken in flexing their muscle over the internet

3:28- The fact that the government tried to stop the manufacturing and sales of VCRs and MP3 players!

3:45-4:05 The government has sped up the passage of the bill since internet users started disseminating information on it.

More censorship. Less Reliability. Taking away our first amendment rights in an attempt for the entertainment industry, government, corporations, and lawyers to gain more control as well as money. I highlighted a post almost a year ago that detailed the death of the movie business. It basically chronicled how Hollywood was churning out nothing but comic-book crap in an attempt to make quick cash.

Unfortunately, moviegoers have brains too, and can find better content over the web than what's offered in local theaters. Logic would suggest that Hollywood rise to the challenge and produce better products,  but based on the last 5-10 years of movies, that doesn't look like it's a reality. Our economic climate could certainly benefit from an upstart in small businesses, so why would the government try to thwart it's growth by allowing corporations more power in the marketplace?

Henry David Thoreau said, "Things do not change. We change." The internet isn't going anywhere. We must adapt to it rather than try to manipulate it. Our government needs to share that ideology. We start by stopping this bullshit.
